This original and rare pair of Art Deco style bookends depicts two seals in the classic pose of balancing a ball on their noses, placed on a Sienna Yellow marble base. The design is essential, with bold, marked lines, overall pleasingly elegant and proportionate. The pair was produced by sophisticated spelter casting in an artisanal workshop in Saint-Ouen, a quaint suburb of Paris, France, between 1930 and 1935. Master craftsmen then finished the objects by hand to give them a graceful form and subjected them to a delicate and complex treatment with special and secret acids to give them elegant bronze hues. Additionally, to accurately depict the cute snouts of the seals, they used enamel colors for the eyes. The artisans succeeded in infusing the metal with their artistic sensibility, creating two unique and fantastic objects.
The animals were then placed on two rectangular bases of Giallo Siena marble. This marble is a natural stone, typical of the Sienese mountains in Italy, and is one of the most famous and beautiful colored marbles in the country, appreciated since ancient times for important coverings and the creation of decorative objects and jewelry. The Sienese hills are composed of sedimentary metamorphic rocks formed over millennia due to movements of the earth's crust, giving Giallo Siena its main peculiarity: each slab can undoubtedly be considered a unique piece.
Spelter is a metal alloy composed of copper, zinc, and lead, which can be finished in all shades of bronze. It has been used since 1860 for the manufacture of candelabra, watch cases, and lamps. In the early 20th century, many sculptors, such as Jacques Limousin, used it extensively in their production of Art Nouveau and Art Deco ornaments and figurines. The combination of fine workmanship and the preciousness of the materials makes these bookends unique and exclusive.
The two items are in good condition. Single bookend measures: width 11 cm, depth 8 cm, height 13 cm.
