This stunning antique dowry chest from Gujarat, circa 1880, showcases the unique style of this Northern Indian province. The elaborate carvings on the ten panels feature intricate floral designs and depictions of animals, such as an elephant and peacocks. The vibrant red frames add a touch of color to the rich wood, complemented by the intricate geometric patterns on the upper and lower frames. The chest boasts a single door that opens to reveal a spacious interior, and is supported by splayed legs with iron braces.
This antique carved dowry chest was traditionally presented by the bride's parents to the groom's family as a gift, serving to entice a prosperous and appropriate husband for their daughter. The chest was customarily filled with valuable items such as jewellery, silk fabrics, and other precious family heirlooms.
