Copper Pendant Lamps from VEB Metalldrücker Halle, 1970s, Set of 2

Founded in the 1950s as the "Produktionsgenossenschaft des Gürtler- und Metalldrückerhandwerks Halle," the company developed as "VEB Metalldrücker Halle" in the 1960s into the leading East German manufacturer of light metal lamps. Most of the lamps were anonymous factory designs based on models from Scandinavia, whose home decorating culture also had a strong influence in the GDR. From the 1970s, however, designs were increasingly produced in close collaboration with the Hochschule für industrielle Formgestaltung, Burg Giebichenstein. Until the closure of the factory in 2003, several hundred different models were produced in high quantities, which were exported to many Western European countries even before the reunification of Germany. A high number of different spinning cores made a variety of models possible. Countless variations were also possible by additively joining, turning or recombining identical components. Further modification consisted of anodizing the aluminum surfaces copper-colored or painting them colored.
