This black-and-white photograph shows a classic San Francisco scene, featuring one of the city's iconic cable cars, numbered 524, descending a steep hill. The cable car has passengers standing on the rear platform, with signage indicating it’s part of the Powell-Hyde line, heading toward popular destinations like Aquatic Park, the Maritime Museum, and Hyde Beach. In the background, the famous island of Alcatraz is clearly visible in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. The view also includes surrounding buildings, cars, and a pier extending into the water, adding to the urban landscape. The steep descent of the street, coupled with the cable car in the foreground, creates a dynamic and quintessentially San Francisco scene. Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
