Large Painted Shandong Trunk

About This Piece

Vintage Design

Originally from Shandong province, northern China, this beautiful large, deep painted trunk would most likely have been used for storing clothes or personal possessions. The old red lacquer finish is now muted but the paintings are still largely intact and depict vases and various items associated with a scholar, including a painted table screen in the centre. The upper section of the base is divided into three panels, each painted with a simple floral design. The hardware is new, but in keeping with the age of the piece.
