Created at Similkameen Artist Residency in the Canadian desert of central British Columbia, Singleton reflects the neon colours of the surrounding forest fires, now a yearly occurrence due to a heating planet. She plays with metaphor by building up the lovers faces with the surrounding forest environment so that they are indistinguishably made of the same stuff. The lovers lips are locked together in a desperate and permanent embrace. Singleton starts a painting by working abstractly, painting in colour and marks. She builds up layers and develops a setting and figures and finally a narrative. The amount of time taken to complete a piece varies considerably depending on the artwork. Singleton uses iridescent and florescent pigments that shimmer and glow differently with changing light. There is a nice texture to the physical pieces that is difficult to see photographed. This piece looks fantastic floated in 50cm x 40 cm frame.
