Set of two splendid Pulegoso vases. One round and the other tall. The round is lighter and the tall is a darker tone of mustard. Perfectly executed Pulegoso finish. This is the Crugiolo Pulegoso of Murano. The mouth has an external gold leaf border that is difficult to notice because it does not contrast with the background. A simply magnificent and rare set. At first I believed, given the round shape, that Bisazza had taken Carlo Scarpa's original round shape from the 1930s. When I was able to see the pieces and the year, everything was clear. In the latter part of the 1980s there was a rediscovery of Native American arts in interior design. Specifically, Navaho products. Just as Carlo Scarpa was inspired by Japanese forms, here Bisazza has translated the art of Navaho ceramics into glass. The motif of an intense color, these orange-toned Puligosos, is part of the Seguso tradition. Colors that are not in fashion. This collection belongs to the production of Livio Seguso, created under the ownership of Bisazza for a short period in the early nineties. Livio continued his career as an artist with the freedom and free state of mind that comes from not owning a business. A path similar to that of Luciano Vistosi. Bisazza, the famous luxury mosaic company, continued the Seguso patterns through the early part of the 1990s. He then closed the kiln and continued to concentrate on his mosaic collection. His masters, Elio Raffaelli and Roberto Camozzo, continued the production of massif independently. It features the spiral Bisazza logo. The measurements listed are the tall ones: Ball height 23.5 cm (9 1/4 inches), diameter 24 (9 1/2 inches approx.) Height 29.5 cm (11 1/2 inches), diameter 25 (10 inches about).

About the Creator

Carlo Scarpa

Born in Venice in 1906, Carlo Scarpa studied architectural design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. After graduating in 1926, he taught architectural drawing at the Academy, where he held multiple posts throughout his life. At the same time, Scarpa launched his career as an industrial and interior designer, creating multiple designs for Venini Glass Works in Venice. His most recognized pre-war project, however, was the 1935 restoration and renovation of the School of Economics at the University of Venice. His post-war commissions consisted primarily of historic building renovations, interior remodeling, and exhibition installations, often revealing the influence of Art Nouveau, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Josef Hoffmann.

Scarpa’s architecture is characterized by a great sensitivity to the changes of time. Important projects include the Canova Plaster Cast Gallery in Possagno (Treviso) (1955-1957); Olivetti showroom in Piazza S. Marco, Venice (1957-1958); and the Banca Popolare di Verona, which Scarpa began in 1973, and which was completed after his death by Arrigo Rudi.

He created multiple landscape, garden, and building designs across Italy, as well as in Canada, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and France. He died in Japan in 1978. He is buried, fittingly, in the Brion Tomb complex in the San Vito d'Altivole (Treviso) cemetery—a 1969 Scarpa design that some call his most important work.
